KENT MABEN'S WEBSITE: Sunday, August 6, 2007 POST SIREN PARENTING There have been some interesting articles written recently on this subject, but I found this one quite interesting. In the UK, parents are being warned to restrict kids' access to digital media such as the internet, MP3 players and game consoles as new research shows they are having a damaging effect on children's brain development. The study, published in the U.S. journal The Lancet, showed that youngsters' scores on a standardized test measuring critical thinking and problem solving were significantly lower than children who had grown up without digital media. "Children who are growing up in a digital world are likely to be less prepared to deal with the complexity of the modern world than their parents and grandparents," said Dr. Charles Fernyhough, of Oxford University's department of child health, who led the study. Children who had been exposed to digital media for at least three hours a week, on average, had significantly lower test scores than those who spent no more than two hours on the internet and two hours on MP3 players and video games, he said. "Children whose brains were developing on a steady diet of digital media were showing signs of delayed brain development at the age of seven and nine years, compared to those whose brains were growing without the presence of digital media," he added. In a separate study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in December 2006, Fernyhough also showed that the effects of digital media use on children's brain development were worse in males than in females. "We found no evidence to suggest that certain genres of digital media had a stronger negative impact than others, but overall the study showed that all forms of digital media use can have a negative impact on children's brain development," Fernyhough said. Fernyhough said while further research was needed to establish whether this was a cause for concern, it was important to develop programs to limit the use of digital media in young children's lives. "We do not recommend children have access to digital media overnight," Fern be359ba680
